Andrej Pejic Gets Sex Reassignment Surgery, Now Andreja

Revealing the news to Entertainment Tonight and People magazine, Andrej Pejic, now Andreja announced that she underwent a sex reassignment surgery earlier this year. Talking to Style.com, Pejic explained, “I figured out who I was very early on–actually, at the age of 13, with the help of the Internet–so I knew that a transition, becoming a woman, was always something I needed to do. But it wasn’t possible at the time, and I put it off, and androgyny became a way of expressing my femininity without having to explain myself to people too much. Especially to my peers [who] couldn’t understand things like ‘trans’ and gender identity. And then obviously the modeling thing came up, and I became this androgynous male model, and that was a big part of my growing up and my self-discovery. But I always kept in mind that, ultimately, my biggest dream was to be a girl. I wasn’t ready to talk about it before in a public way because I was scared that I would not be understood. I didn’t know if people would like me. But now I’m taking that step because I’m a little older–I’m 22–and I think my story can help people. My goal is to give a human face to this struggle, and I feel like I have a responsibility.”

Pejic goes on to explain that he informed his New York agency DNA of his decision at the last moment. Pejic recalls, “It’s been an interesting experience. I had the surgery early this year, and I told my men’s agent at DNA about two weeks before the operation. I just said, ‘This is what’s happening,’ because I didn’t want anything to stop me. I had decided. And then recently, I had a meeting with the women’s [team], and they’ve been very positive about moving from the men’s board to the women’s board, which is amazing. It’s something I guess no one’s ever done.” Next up for Pejic is a role in

Я хочу воспользоваться этой возможностью, чтобы поблагодарить всех за любовь и поддержку на протяжении многих лет. Вы все помогли мне пройти этот путь, я узнала много нового и стала самой собой, а реакция на сегодняшнее заявление действительно восхитила меня и напомнила о том, почему я решила сделать это публично.

Я думаю, мы все развиваемся по мере того, как становимся старше, и это нормально, но мне нравится думать, что это изменение не превратило меня в другую личность. Тот же человек, никакой разницы в целом, просто другой пол. Я надеюсь вы все понимаете это.

Я также хотела бы обратиться ко всем молодым людям с гендерным несоответствием: я знаю, как это трудно, я прошла через это, но помните о вашем праве быть принятыми так, как вы считаете верным. Вы заслуживаете то же уважение, как и любой другой человек на этой планете. Как транссексуальная женщина, я надеюсь показать, что после трансформации (то, что спасло мне жизнь) можно быть счастливой и успешной в своей новой роли, без необходимости отвергать свое прошлое. Самое главное - различия не должны приводить к разделению, нам нужно единение. #будьчестенбудьсобой
